You may hate or love the new Volkwagen Beetle’s styling, but there’s no denying that with the addition of the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDI, the new Beetle offers one of the most diverse powertrain lineups of any small coupe on the market.

A diesel engine was offered in the Beetle from 1998 to 2006. The new Beetle TDI engine features a number of improvements over the previous 1.9-liter turbo four, including a common-rail design, reduced noise, vibration, and harshness, and an intake manifold that features active flap valves that better maintains optimal air flow. Fuel economy estimates have been set at 29 mpg city and 39 in the highway. The Volkswagen Beetle TDI will get a three-level trim lineup similar to the 2.5-liter and 2.0-liter Turbo model: Beetle TDI base, TDI with sunroof, and TDI with sunroof, sound, and navigation. Pricing details will be released closer to its summer debut.
