Tokyo Show 2011 Highlights: Volkswagen Cross Coupe Concept

Klaus Bischoff, Executive Director of Volkswagen Design, has confirmed that the Volkswagen Cross Coupé concept shown at the Tokyo motor show shows off design themes of all future SUVs friom the company.

The Cross Coupé also previews the bold new look of its second-generation Tiguan. Sitting on the German car maker’s versatile new MQB platform, the new four-seater, four-wheel drive petrol-electric hybrid is officially described as a cross between a four-door coupé and compact SUV, which has led many to speculate that Volkswagen is considering a second compact off-roader model in the mould of the Range Rover Evoque.

However, Volkswagen sources close to design boss Walter de Silva have confirmed to Autocar that the Cross Coupé has a broader brief in previewing a new design lineage that will be adopted by all of the company’s upcoming SUV models, including the next Tiguan due out in 2014.

“We won’t rule out the possibility of adding a sportier SUV to the Volkswagen line-up at some time. But the main message with the Cross Coupé is its styling, which stands for the future of SUV design at Volkswagen,” Autocar was told.

The Cross Coupé combines front-end styling elements first seen on Volkswagen-owned Giugiaro penned Tex and Go concepts wheeled out at the Geneva motor show earlier this year with heavily sculptured surfaces throughout. It has a highly defined shoulder – or tornado line as de Silva refers to it – higher waistline, shallow side glass, heavily angled tailgate, distinctive wheel arch design and 20-inch alloy wheels shod with substantial 265/45 profile tyres.

The five-door Cross Coupé is both considerably bolder than the existing Tiguan, whose design dates back to 2005 and a former Volkswagen design team headed by Murat Gunak.

Inside, Volkswagen has provided its latest concept with a classy Audi-esque cabin with a sweeping dashboard whose various horizontal design elements mirror those of the exterior, a hi-tech instrument display combining traditional analogue and the latest in computer enhanced graphics. It also has grab handles incorporated into the centre pod and four heavily contoured seats separated by a high set centre tunnel which is used to store a battery that powers the concept’s electric motors.

At 4345mm in length, 1868mm in width and 1523mm in height, the Cross Coupé is 125mm shorter, 58mm wider and a significant 177mm lower than today’s first generation Tiguan. It also rides on a wheelbase that is 26mm longer at 2630mm – allied to tracks that up by 15mm at the front and by 43mm at the rear at 1585mm and 1613mm respectively. Nominal boot space underneath the rear windows is put at 380 litres – or 90 litres less than the Tiguan, rising to 1230 litres when the rear seats are folded away.

New Car: 2012 Lexus IS-F Circuit Club Sport

Toyota’s race tuning division, TRD, has produced a motorsport-inspired version of the Lexus IS-F.

The Lexus IS-F Circuit Club Sport was first shown off as a concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon in 2010, and the finished article is tipped to appear at next week’s motor show in the Japanese capital city.

The IS-F Circuit Club Sport features carbonfibre in place of many of the regular IS-F’s steel panels, on the bonnet, roof, boot, front wings, side skirts and rear diffuser.

The interior has also received a carbonfibre makeover from TRD (Toyota Racing Development), although it hasn’t been revealed how much weight has been saved overall.

TRD hasn’t made many tweaks under the bonnet, with the only major change being the addition of a new lightweight exhaust system, which boosts the V8’s power to 422bhp.

Adjustable competition-spec dampers have been fitted, as well as forged aluminium wheels, larger brakes and a TRD limited-slip differential.

Price and availability of the limited-edition machine has yet to be revealed.

"We’ve come to the conclusion that it is better to cut our losses with Maybach than to continue into an uncertain future with a brand that has failed to live up to original sales expectations," said the insider. "Plans are already in place to fill the void left by the axing of the Maybach 57 and 62 with the next-generation S-class, which will be offered in three wheelbase variations, including a top-of-the-range S600 Pullman."

Moves to push Mercedes-Benz further upmarket into the segment follows an internal marketing study which came to the conclusion that it has more potential to succeed in the upper luxury segment against competition from the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce than Maybach, which despite being revered at home in Germany failed to gain traction in key world markets.

Despite the plan to dump Maybach, both the existing 57 and 62 will be produced through to early 2013, at which point the fifth-generation S-class is due to be introduced.

The Maybach brand was resurrected by Mercedes-Benz in 2002 following its failure to purchase Rolls-Royce and Bentley from then owner Vickers after being outbid by Volkswagen, which then ceded control of Rolls-Royce to BMW.

The original Maybach models, the 57 and 62, were named after their respective lengths of 5735mm and 6170mm. Both were based around stretched underpinnings of the already superceded third-generation S-class, first introduced in 1991.

A recent proposal to involve Aston Martin in the development of future Maybach models was abandoned in early 2011.

The engine produces 107bhp at 6000rpm and 99lb ft at 4500rpm. The manual car has a top speed of 113mph and returns a claimed 43mpg, while the auto version can hit 111mph and offers 42mpg.

The five-seat Xross is 4079mm long, 1739mm wide and 1528mm high, which makes it 80mm longer than a regular MG3, 11mm wider and 11mm higher. Both versions share a 2520mm wheelbase.

The new crossover version has roof rails, plus bolder front-end styling than the base car, with black plastic side mouldings running the length of the body, wheel rims and bumpers.

Bootspace is 256 litres with the rear seats up, and 938 litres with the seat down. The show car rides on 16-inch wheels.

There’s no word on European availability, but the standard MG 3 isn’t expected to arrive here until 2012.

Toyota says the name GT 86 is a nod to the brand’s GT days in Europe when the Corolla GT (or Levin) AE86, was winning British Touring Car championships and rally events in the 1980s. The GT 86 is taking the stage at next week’s 2011 Tokyo auto show, roughly two years after the first concept took the stage at the 2009 Tokyo show. At this point it’s unclear if the FT-86 name will be used at all, we’ll know more shortly.

In European-spec trim, the GT 86 outputs 197 horsepower at 7000 rpm, and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) at 6,600 rpm from Subaru’s updated 2.0-liter Boxer four with a12.5:1 compression ratio and Toyota’s D-4S injection technology added on to help better deliver power across the rev range.

The engine will be mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic with paddle shifters and a limited-slip differential will help put the power down to the rear wheels. So far we don’t have any official performance estimates, but the car is rumored to be able to hit 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds.

New Car: 2012 Guangzhou GS5

As the Guangzhou Auto Show is in Guangzhou Auto’s own backyard, GAC were eager to make the most of the show especially as state owned automotive rivals such as SAIC’s MG and Roewe and also BAIC’s Saab based cars avoided the show. GAC had the full floor to launch the GS5 which quickly became the star of the show, the GS5 is certainly a looker and does not carry the awkward lines of other Chinese SUV’s. Under the hood a 1.8L and 2.0L engine have been sourced from the older Alfa Romeo 159 which should make for some spirited driving and the platform also has some Alfa DNA in it as well. Pricing has not yet been announced, but pricing from 120,000rmb and rising is more than likely for such an SUV. The SUV maybe nice, but the Trumpchi name still sounds rather odd. Does anybody at GAC know what Trump actually means?

Spied: 2015 BMW 4-Series Cabriolet

These first spy pictures of the new BMW 4-series cabriolet in testing reveal that the retractable hard-top roof of the current 3-series cabrio will be retained.

There had been pressure from the US importer for the 4-series cabriolet to switch to a soft-top for greater visual differentiation over the coupe model, but BMW has instead decided to stick with the current hard-top.

Like its coupe sibling, the new 4-series cabriolet, codenamed F33 and due on sale in mid-2014, will ditch the 3-series badge to allow more distinct styling and more exclusive feel over the staple 3-series saloon and estate models.

There’s also likely to be a price hike, too, with engines coming from the higher-end of the new 3-series’ range and an increased level of equipment being offered.

There will also be an M version of the 4-series cabriolet, codenamed F33M. Like the 4-series coupe, this is likely to be badged M4 to create further distance between the M3 saloon and the M4 coupe and cabriolets. The adoption of the M4 badge for the coupe and cabriolet will also allow BMW to get the new M3 saloon to market earlier, with the two-doors not due until late 2014 at the earliest, at least a year after the M3.

Spied: 2013 Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Jaguar’s upcoming estate version of the XF (dubbed Jaguar XF Sportbrake) has been scooped in testing for the first time ahead of its 2012 launch. The load-lugging XF will carry the Sportbrake name for production and is set to be revealed at the Geneva motor show in March.

These spy pictures, taken outside Jaguar’s Whitley engineering centre, reveal a gently sloping roofline, sharply raked tailgate and subtle rear spoiler for the Sportbrake to help maintain the sporty profile of the XF saloon. The Sportbrake also looks to be the same length as the 4961mm-long saloon, as the rear overhang has not been increased.

Jaguar engineers are understood to have provided the XF Sportbrake with a load capacity similar to that of the Audi A6 Avant and BMW 5-series Touring, which have figures of 565-litres and 560-litres respectively. The desire to provide the Sportbrake with a sporty profile means it won’t be able to match the class-leading Mercedes E-class estate’s load capacity figure of 695-litres.

The XF Sportbrake is identical to its saloon sibling from the B-pillars forwards. The heavy disguise over the rear lights indicate that Jaguar may be tempted to offer a different styling direction for the XF Sportbrake to give it greater visual distinction over the saloon. Some sources have suggested it may even borrow the rear light design and blacked-out rear pillar treatment from the XJ to bridge the gap between the XF and XJ saloons.

The engine range of the XF Sportbrake is likely to mirror the saloon’s, with the exception of the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 from the XFR. That means 2.2-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre V6 diesels will be offered alongside the normally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 petrol.

The XF Sportbrake is only the second estate in Jaguar’s history, after the X-Type wagon. The model was not part of the original XF’s product plan, as the word ‘estate’ was off-limits at Jaguar after the X-Type. But the popularity of premium estate cars in Europe, in particular the UK, has convinced bosses that an estate version of the XF is a necessity.

Another imminent development to the XF range is the addition of all-wheel-drive. Jaguar boss Adrian Hallmark said all-wheel drive XFs, along with all-wheel drive XJs, were “critical”, in particular to the company’s growth in the US market.

New Car: 2012 Volkswagen Passat Alltrack

Audi’s third-generation A6 Allroad Quattro has yet to make its public launch, but its cousin – the new Volkswagen Passat Alltrack – will make its official debut at next week’s 2011 Tokyo auto show.

Though it does without the adaptive air suspension deployed on the A6 Allroad, the Passat’s ride height has been raised. As a result, ground clearance is increased from 5.3 inches to 6.5 inches, while approach and departure angles have increased to 13.6 and 12.8 degrees, respectively.

VW says the stainless-look front and rear skidplates serve as protective armor for underpinnings, but they – along with flared rocker sills trimmed in a similar finish – will likely serve as little more than cosmetic flair. Other exterior revisions, including flared wheel arches, large “snowflake” wheels, pronounced roof rails, and chunky lower bumper trim, attempt to lend the Alltrack wagon more visual heft.

Predictably, the Alltrack employs Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. In most situations, 90 percent of the engine’s power is sent to the front wheels, but a Haldex clutch pack can send all of that power to the rear axle. New Car: 2012 Hyundai i10 Blue Drive LPG

Hyundai has launched an LPG variant of its i10 hatchback, called the i10 Blue Drive.

This model comes with a factory-fitted LPG kit that has a 34-litre LPG tank while the conventional petrol tank has a 35-litre capacity. According to Hyundai, the LPG-kit is ARAI certified and is impact resistant as well. It is also certified by DOE (Department of Explosives). The LPG-kit is also backed by a two year warranty.

The i10 Blue Drive is priced at Rs 4.2 lakh for the Era while the Magna LPG variant is priced at Rs 4.31 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Hot News: Lexus to Releas Small Hybrid for GS

Lexus is developing a small hybrid engine to allow its new GS luxury car to compete with more economical European rivals.

Speaking to Auto Express, Koji Sato, deputy chief engineer, product planning said: "We are working on a number of solutions to offer low CO2 emissions and these include a small hybrid."

The new GS launches in the UK in the summer but the only models will be a range-topping GS450h with a 338bhp 3.5-litre V6 hybrid and an entry-level GS250 with a 206bhp 2.5-litre V6.

A small economical and low-emissions hybrid would allow the new GS to compete against big-selling models like the BMW 520d and Audi A6 2.0 TDI, as Lexus has no plans for a diesel version. "Lexus has a strong association with hybrid and we want to continue to develop this," Sato added.

Although there are no details on the new powerplant, it is likely to sit at the entry point to the range and is likely to be a four-cylinder petrol engine mated to an electric motor. Combined power output should be around 180bhp.

Sato said the engine would have to boast fuel economy and CO2 emissions on a par with the BMW 520d, so expect the model to emit around 120g/km of CO2 and return around 50mpg.
