Frankfurt Show 2011 Highlights: Kia GT Concept

Kia has revealed a flagship four-door GT at the Frankfurt Motor Show that's set to be the brand's first ever front-engined rear-wheel drive model.

Under the long bonnet sits a 3.3-litre turbocharged V6 petrol, producing 390bhp. This will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The stylish four-seater Kia GT is the Korean brand's rival to the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes CLS. The move to rear-wheel-drive platform is a major turning point for Kia, allowing designers to explore exciting new proportions.

Kia's Chief Deisgner Peter Schreyer who penned the Kia GT commented, "The classic front-engined, rear-wheel drive layout of a performance saloon has distinct appeal not just for the domestic Korean audience, but also for the European and American markets."

Kia admits the design was inspired by GT cars of the 1970s, combining the trademark bow-tie grille with muscular wheel arches and a rear-set cabin. Large alloy and carbon-fibre propellor-style wheels fill the arches and bring the design right up to date. Below the headlights, large front air-intakes are reminiscent of the Aston Martin One-77 whilst at the rear, the aerodynamic diffuser and truncated rear complete the performance-orientated appearance of the GT.

The rear-hinged passenger doors open slightly upwards to reveal a stylish, copper themed concept interior that provides ample space for four occupants. Featuring single-piece seats that 'float' on arched supports, the dimensions of the transmission tunnel are clear to see.

Schreyer continued, "Yes, it would be a dream to to put this into production- it has a logical layout, with four seats, and good luggage space, and it's also engaging and dynamic and makes a strong statement. It's exactly the kind of car Kia should be making." For more details click here.
