2012 Dodge Avenger R/T Makes its Debut

2012 Dodge Avenger R/T Makes its Debut
Chrysler today announced the new 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T will make its worldwide auto show debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show, starting with media days on April 20. Consumers who visit the auto show can check out the new Avenger R/T model April 22 through May 1, 2011.

With exceptional V-6 fuel economy, the new Dodge Avenger is the perfect sedan for the customer who wants an enthusiastic driving performance at a great value. With a stiffened suspension, best-in-class 283 horsepower engine, center-mounted tachometer and performance-inspired interior and exterior design, the 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T ups the driving fun factor.

“The Avenger R/T makes driving a mid-size car a really fun, engaging experience,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Brand — Chrysler Group LLC. “The Avenger R/T offers performance design cues both inside and out, as well as unique handling characteristics and a sport-tuned suspension. It’s a vehicle that is ready to earn its stripes as part of the Dodge performance family of vehicles.”

In 2011, Dodge introduced the new Dodge Avenger mid-sized sedan. With more standard features than other vehicles in the segment – an all-new interior, a new powertrain, including one of Ward’s “10 Best Engines,” the best-in-class 283 horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transaxle, a significantly updated suspension that results in exceptional driving dynamics and an updated design – the Dodge Avenger is a vehicle packed with value and a style all its own.

The new for 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T model builds on all the improvements made to the 2011 model giving mid-size sedan customers an unmatched driving experience along with Dodge attitude. Dodge engineers amplified the driving experience by giving the Dodge Avenger R/T a superlative powertrain and performance-tuned suspension. The 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T is powered by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transaxle, which has an EPA fuel economy rating of 19 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

To make it stay true to the Dodge R/T DNA, engineers tuned the Avenger’s suspension specifically to the R/T model. They increased roll stiffness by 18 percent, and spring rates by 17 percent in the front and more than 12 percent in the rear. Front strut damping rates are increased 15 percent, rear strut damping rates are increased almost 20 percent and the rear stabilizer bar diameter is 2 mm larger, increased from 19 mm to 21 mm. The suspension changes result in a spirited, performance sedan driving experience. With best-in-class 283 horsepower, and still delivering 29 miles per gallon on the highway, the Avenger R/T is unmatched in its class.

The Dodge Avenger R/T model exterior has unique exterior design elements, including a unique body-color grille with the Dodge badge, menacing black headlamp background, the “war paint” R/T decal on the front quarter panel and unique 18-in. painted aluminum wheels. The performance elements carry through to the rear of the vehicle with a spoiler and the “R/T” badge.

The interior of the 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T sports distinctive Aunde fabric with Z stripe fabric inserts, red stitching and aggressive leather-trimmed bolsters that hold drivers and passengers firmly in their seats when they put the Avenger to the test. The front seats are heated and sport an “R/T” graphic stitched in red on the front headrests. Drivers will notice a cockpit unlike other Avenger models. It features a unique gauge cluster with a center-mounted tachometer with the “R/T” graphic and SRT-inspired brake and accelerator pedal pads. The steering wheel is wrapped in perforated leather with red accent stitching. A Boston Acoustic sound system compliments the standard 276-watt touchscreen entertainment center with a 30-gigabyte hard drive. The excellent sound system and remote start are some of the many standard features on the Avenger R/T model.

The Dodge Avenger mid-size sedan is a 2011 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick, and provides customers an abundance of standard safety and high-tech features designed to keep drivers connected with their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Standard safety features include advanced multi-stage front passenger air bags, front seat side air bags, electronic stability control with electronic traction control, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, supplemental side curtain air bags and LATCH child seat anchor system.

REVA Battery Car Tech 2011 - Chetan Maini

The country’s leading sports utility vehicle producer, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, announced today that it has bought a controlling stake of 55.2 per cent in the city based Reva Electric Car company with immediate effect. Mahindras would infuse Rs 45 crore in the company.

Consequently, the company will now be renamed as Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicle Company or Mahindra Reva.

Post the buyout the board of Mahindra Reva has been reconstituted under the chairmanship of Mr Pawan Goenka, president, automotive and farm equipment sectors, Mahindra and Mahindra. Mr Goenka told reporters here today that the new board would now include five nominees of Mahindra and Mahindra, two from the Maini family and one from AEV LLC, California, co-founders of Reva. Mr Chetan Maini would continue to play a leading role in Mahindra Reva as chief, technology and strategy while remaining on the board.

While refusing to divulge details of the transaction between the two companies, Mr Goenka said that the current capacity of Reva, the battery operated car, was around 6,000. Another 30,000 was set to be added at its new unit in the city. The overall sales of Reva vehicles stood at 3,500 at present.

This was expected to go up substantially as Mahindra and Mahindra would use their wide distribution network in India and abroad to promote the eco-friendly vehicle.

Additionally, he said that post buyout, the possibility of reducing the price of Reva vehicles substantially could not be ruled out because Mahindra and Mahindra would be able to leverage its vehicle development expertise for the purpose. This would make the components cheaper.

The deal is expected to give Mahindra access to the much needed technology as it wants to be ready when the demand for the eco-friendly vehicles goes up in the immediate future, considering the growing awareness for environment friendly cars.
That the investment in Reva is part of a long-term strategy was evident when Mr Goenka said that within the next few years, he expected the domestic market to touch 80,000 to 1,00,000 vehicles. By 2020, he said there could be over 1.5 million to two million Reva vehicles on the road across the globe.

As he explained, it was a strategic acquisition for Mahindra and Mahindra and Reva brought the company complementary strengths. With Mahindra’s global distribution network, sourcing clout and financing support, Reva would have the potential to gain in market penetration.

Equally important, Mahindra would benefit from Reva's electric vehicle technology for its own products.
Mr Chetan Maini, chief, technology and strategy, and founder of Reva car, on his part, said that the electric vehicle market was poised to grow significantly. The founders, therefore, had concluded that to seize the opportunity, they needed the resources and experience of a major automotive manufacturer.

In Mahindra, he said, the founders got a company that shared their vision. Following Mahindra’s investment, Mahindra Reva would now be able to scale, innovate and accelerate to deliver more products to customers, he said.

Mitsubishi Prices 2012 ‘i’ Electric Car

Mitsubishi Prices 2012 ‘i’ Electric Car

Mitsubishi Prices 2012 ‘i’ Electric Car At $27,990 Before Tax Breaks 2012 Mitsubishi Driving electric just got cheaper, as Mitsubishi announced that its 2012 ‘i’ electric car would be priced at just $27,990 before incentives when deliveries begin in California next January.

That makes the 2012 Mitsubishi ‘i’ the least expensive plug-in car on sale in the U.S. market. It qualifies for a $7,500 Federal income-tax credit, plus a host of state, local, and corporate incentives.

The new pricing puts significant pressure on Toyota, which had vowed that its 2012 Prius Plug-In Hybrid would be the lowest-priced plug-in sold in the States when it goes on sale by June 2012.

The price of $27,990 applies to the base trim level, known as the ‘i’ ES. The next level up, the SE, adds 15-inch aluminum wheels, fog lamps, and a better sound system, for an additional $2,000.

And the SE Premium trim level, for $2,790 more, adds a navigation system, more infotainment options, and a DC fast-charging port.

That last option may be the most important one, since it allows the battery pack to be recharged to about 80 percent of capacity in just half an hour.

The fast-charge port uses the same Chademo standard that’s also optional on the 2011 Nissan Leaf, meaning that the handful of fast charging stations that now exist in the U.S.–there are ambitious plans to add more–will work with either vehicle.

One final option on the 2012 Mitsubishi ‘i’ electric car is the Cold Zone package, which includes heated exterior mirrors and a system to keep the lithium-ion battery pack warm.

The price does not include a required delivery charge, which Mitsubishi spokesman Moe Durand estimated to be in the neighborhood of $720.

Applying the same math that we used for a hypothetical buyer of a 2011 Nissan Leaf who lived and worked in a very particular set of circumstances, there are a handful of California buyers who might be able to buy a 2012 Mitsubishi ‘i’ for slightly less than $8,000.

2011 Chevrolet Volt wins 2011 World Green Car of the Year
While the 2011 Nissan LEAF won the 2011 World Car of the Year award at the 2011 New York Auto Show, the Chevrolet Volt was named the 2011 World Green Car of the Year.

“The selection of the Volt as the World Green Car is a further proof point of the fuel-efficient technologies that are now being offered by the Chevrolet brand around the world,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “This award, and the others that have preceded it, validate the efforts of the development team to build a truly remarkable vehicle with the potential to transform transportation around the globe.”

The Chevrolet Volt beat out a list of 12 vehicles from around the world including finalists BMW 320d EfficientDynamics and the Nissan LEAF.
2011 Chevrolet Volt wins

Refresher: The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is powered by 16-kWh, ‘T’-shaped lithium-ion battery that powers the electric drive unit, which allows it to drive 40 miles on battery power alone. The system puts out 149-hp and a maximum torque of 273 lb-ft, allowing the Volt to go from 0-60 mph in about 9 seconds, hitting a top speed of 100 mph. The battery can be re-charged by plugging into a household outlet and takes 4 hours to recharge on 240 volts, and about 10-12 hours on a standard 120-volt outlet. The Chevrolet Volt also carries an 84-hp 1.4 4-clyinder engine that allows the five-door, FWD sedan to travel additional miles while averaging a fuel-economy of 50 mpg. A fully charged battery and full tank of gas will allow the Volt to travel 379 miles. The 2011 Chevrolet Volt gets an EPA estimated 93 miles per ’gallon-equivalent’ when driving under electric power only, 37 mpg when in gasoline mode and over the long term it is estimated zo get 60 miles per gallon in combined gasoline-powered and electric-powered driving. Prices for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt start at $41,000 but with a full federal income tax credit (which range from $0 to $7,500), the Volt can cost a total of $33,500.

The 7 Sexiest Cars Of 2010

Every person expects something different from a car – some want a SUV like the 2010 Ford Explorer, others want a Porsche 918 Spyder. Car manufacturers try their best to meet these expectations. For some a car is a statement, a few get cars that best describe them and for some it’s just transport. Here you can see the best cars picked for the year 2010. The cars showcased at the 80th International Geneva Motor Show make the future of automobiles appear bright and shiny. The power of these mean machines was not dimmed even by the lovely motor show booth babes. Those of you who feel left out missed out on the babes but can definitely catch the top cars for this year. In no particular order:

Koenigsegg Agera- Every car must grow from its previous design and the Koenigsegg Agera is a proof of that. This masterpiece is sculpted from a fine mesh of carbon fiber and aluminum. Powered by a 4.7 liter V8 engine it can jumpstart this 1290 Kg animal from 0-100 in well under 3.1 seconds. A car that was designed to stay well ahead of any curve, the Agera is often thought of as an evolution of the CCX. Other features include a set of wheels that are made to generate a vortex as they are more useful in sucking hot air away from the brakes region. Hot air escapes the engine through holes in the taillights thus making the whole scene appear like oval doughnut taillights. With a raw power of 910 hp at over 7000 rpm there is no telling what this beast is capable of.

Koenigsegg Agera

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid- A Charm to look at, this open two-seater plug in hybrid sports car has a fluid cooled lithium ion battery that gives it the perfect charge. This sly Spyder is often called the predator of the road and it exhibits a modern slipstream carbon fiber design that races from 0-100 Kmph in no more than 3.2 seconds. Although it has a top speed of almost 320 Kmph its fuel efficiency is not compromised and it can give up to 35 Km per liter. This amounts to 70 grams CO2 per Km which is considered an excellent achievement for a beast which runs on a powerful V8 engine that roars once it’s on the street.

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid

Alfa Romeo Giulietta- the Italians do more than bake bread and the perfect example of their achievements in the field of automobiles is the Giulietta. This aerodynamic hatchback with five doors has the requisite dynamic features to show both comfort and aggression. Second only to their pizzas and spaghetti, this car’s base model runs on a 1.4 liter multi-air turbocharged gas engine and the higher cloverleaf model performs its best on a 235 horse power 1.75 liter turbocharged gas engine.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Mercedes F800 Style- the F800 shows a clearly mature and responsible design as it sees Mercedes in the form of a spacious five-seater sedan which has a more futuristic approach to the car’s external styling and also in its approach to the environment. Its plug in hybrid gives almost over 400 bhp of raw power and this in combination with the fuel cells system and the electric drive offer a very good drive and reach speeds of over 375 Kmph. A 300hp direct injection V6 gas engine and a 109hp hybrid module allow the car to function perfectly with and without fuel and also allowing it to run close to 18 miles on pure electricity. That by any standards is an achievement.

Mercedes F800 Style

Audi A1- How many of you fell in love with the Audi in the movie ‘The Transporter’? The brand new Audi A1 will have you crave for one of your own. A single look at it is enough to get your jaws to drop. With an exterior style that can be compared to the likes of Mini Cooper, this car provides both a front wheel and back wheel drive mechanism options. The tax issues imposed on Audi make it almost impossible for it to appear on the US markets till 2015 but its features are well worth the wait. It comes in four doors as well as in two doors. A fully customized interior and LED and xenon lights make this car a pleasure to behold.

Audi A1

Ferrari 599 HY KERS- another Italian makes the top as Ferrari gives the world one more beauty. This stallion comes with a green makeover and features Ferrari’s latest regenerative braking technology integrated into seven dual clutch transmission and installed right below the centre of gravity of the car. The car’s already powerful V12 engine is further enhanced by the 100horse power that is added by the KERS system which weighs almost 40 Kilograms. Apart from these features it can even drive on pure electricity which is suitable for city drivers.

Ferrari 599 HY KERS

Lotus Evora- No motor show is complete without Lotus displaying its precision engineering. This year Lotus has a 1382 Kilogram 3.5 liter V6 mid-engine sports car that speeds from 0-100 in only 5.1 seconds. Apart from offering a top speed of 231kmph this lightweight sports car consumes only 8.7 liter of fuel for every 100 km travelled with a carbon emission of less than 205 g per km of CO2. A rear diffuser and a spoiler and installed to use aerodynamics tricks to keep the car stable at high speeds. Since it uses Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs it should flow about smoothly. The sense of having a good interior is not lost on Lotus as they cushion Evora’s interior with air conditioning, tire pressure monitoring system, a remote garage door opener and leather seating. An alpine audio system with provisions for iPod and Bluetooth connectivity are some of the other features used in this car.

"I would like to congratulate Yuvraj on being declared the Man of the Tournament at the World Cup 2011. His performance on the cricket field has made us all proud," said Perschke.

Perschke said that it was cricket which first brought Audi to India as an Audi 100 was gifted to Shastri for his winning performance at the World Cricket Championship in Australia in 1985, where he was declared the Champion of Champions.

On his part, Yuvraj said he was happy to be presented with the swanky car.

"It is after 28 years India brings the World Cup home. It is an honour to be chosen and felicitated by Audi as they continue their tradition," Singh.

"My association with the iconic brand Audi began 26 years ago, when I brought home the country's first ever Audi. I am happy to see Audi India take this tradition forward and continue to recognise the achievement of champions in the cricketing field," said Shastri.

He added that Yuvraj, with his versatility, consistency, talent and thirst for excellence, has set new benchmarks in the cricketing world.

Hero Honda has finally launched the much awaited tourer bike - Karizma ZMR Fi in Indian Market. Karizma ZMR will be sold along with old Karizma model, Hero Honda has decided not to phase out Karizma R and sell both the models side by side. They don’t want to end the competition for Apache 180 & Pulsar 220 as Karizma R is priced around Rs. 80,000.

The stance remains the same as the old Karizma which is still considered to be the best touring bike in India with smooth, refined and relaxed Honda engine at the helm. The major and much needed change is addition of programmed fuel injection (PGM-Fi) in the engine. Additionally it also gets disc brake at the rear, gas charged rear shock absorbers, little increase in power and torque. Hero Honda also started giving teaser advertisement on leading TV channels in which they show few glimpses of New ZMR’s front fairing, headlight and tail light. BMW Launches New Sub-brand Electric Vehicle

The new BMW sub-brand focused on developing sustainable mobility solutions has been launched. In the first row, two models will be launched under the new sub-brand from 2013 - BMW BMW i3 and i8. BMW Group will also significantly expand its range of mobility services over the coming years. To achieve this, was a venture capital firm founded in New York, BMW Ventures I, with a total investment of U.S. $ 100 million.

"I offer visionary BMW and services, design inspiration and a completely new idea mobility allowance - with a focus on sustainability," said Ian Robertson, member of the Executive Board of BMW. BMW, I mark consists of vehicles and services developed since 2007 are included in the project in a BMW Group discussion exploring sustainable mobility solutions. The BMW Group in response to changing customer needs, including the growing demand for alternative powertrains, such as electric drive systems and hybrids.

"With BMW, we rely on the success and strength of our core brand," said Robertson. BMW i3-previously known as Megacity Vehicle - BMW Group is the first car in the city to be driven on electric power only. BMW i8, in turn, depends on the BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics concept study. The plug-in hybrid combines sportiness possible for a high performance machine using fuel consumption and emissions of small cars. Until the publication in 2013, you may want to fill the waiting time with a BMW.

Both models are based on an innovative concept of building listed in the architecture of life of the unit. An aluminum chassis houses the powertrain, and includes high-strength cabin, but very light carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). "Both cars are being designed specifically for their alternative propulsion systems. We used the innovative architecture and CFRP to cancel almost all the extra weight added by batteries. For customers, this means a dynamic senior management, along with a wide significantly increased use of electricity, "said Klaus Draeger, member of the board of BMW responsible for the development.

An extraordinary selection of mobility services - which can also be used separately from the car - are an integral part of i. This can create a new BMW, part of the business profitable in the long term and to attract new customers to the brand of the company.

"Mobility requirements are changing rapidly growing mega-cities," says Ian Robertson. "We are committed to self-use mobility services, such as the BMW turned to run, will be enlarged with BMW i will also increase their self Mobility Services Premium. What's really innovative is that we start an independent commission 'Car of mobility services. BMW My goal is to provide tailored solutions for mobile network seamlessly high quality products and services. "The emphasis is on solutions that will improve the existing parking, as well as intelligent navigation systems with local information, intermodal route planning and premium car-sharing.

The New S1000rr Sportbike Takes On The Best High-Performance Bikes

BMW S1000RR Shootout - Street

His insatiable thirst for life is only surpassed by his monthly fuel bill. Whether rocketing on land, flying through the air, or jumping the seas, our Associate Editor does it all and has the scars to prove it.

For the first-time ever, German motor-sports giant BMW enters Super bike Smack down competition with its all-new S1000RR. Earlier we had the opportunity to ride it during a stand alone test in Portugal. Read about it in the 2010 BMW S1000RR First Ride and then check out how it fared in our Super-bike Smack-down VII Track test too. BMW’s flagship Super-bike features more techno-wizardry than any other mass-produced production street bike. Adjustable multi-mode engine power, traction control and ABS, an electronic quick-shifter, and an ultra high-tech Inline Four engine that spins up to 14,000 revs and delivers 180-plus rear wheel horsepower all for a price that is competitive with all four of the motorcycles from Japan. It’s amazing.

ENGINE

Powering BMW’s S1000RR is a liquid-cooled 999cc Inline Four with a conventional firing order as used on the Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki. Bore/stroke dimensions are 80 x 49.7mm which gives the BMW the most oversquare piston size of the four-cylinder group. A 16-valve cylinder head with double overhead camshafts is also shared. Intake charge is compressed to 13:1 ratio which is identical to the RSV4R but down 0.4 compared to the class-leading KTM.

Twist the grip and you’ll notice that its pull feels heavier than rest of the bikes, which takes a bit of time to get used to. Power comes on nice and smooth but feels mellow like the rest of the four cylinders with exception of the GSX-R. Engine vibration is minimal and right on par with the Ninja but is still not as balanced as the R1. As revs climb through 6000 rpm the BMW churns out a linear spread of power but it’s nothing too impressive compared to the punch of the V-Twins and the CBR. However, keep the throttle pinned and when the teach needle hits nine grand things start to happen quick…

All of a sudden it feels like someone pressed the nitrous button with a burst of acceleration. Peak torque is reached at a lofty 10,700 rpm with it churning out 80.31 lb-ft of the good stuff, giving it the highest peak torque figure aside from the Twins. But it isn’t over yet. As revs increase further the whirl of the valve-train makes a sound like you’re at the controls of an F1 car—no joke, it sounds insane. Hold on tight as the engine shrills to life pumping out more horsepower at 11,000 revs than any other bike in this test! And the best part? You still have another 3000 rpm to go! With the throttle buried to the stop the engine sounds like it’s about to explode throwing you forward with such voracity that all other liter-class bikes now feel slow.

At 13,300 rpm, peak horsepower is reached with a whopping 182.83 horsepower delivered at the rear Metzeler tire. If you missed it I’ll say it again: Nearly 183 horsepower out of a bone-stock street bike! With 700 revs to go before red-line, horsepower barely tapers when the rev limiter comes in at 14,000 rpm.

“It’s kind of lacking off the bottom and the mid-range isn’t that impressive either especially compared to the Honda,” explains Atlas of the BMW’s engine performance. “But find a straight stretch of road, dial in full throttle and you better be hanging on tight. It has 20 more horsepower than the competition and more power than most people’s cars. It may not be that usable during the commute to work but who cares.”

Although the S1000RR’s engine shrieks at high rpm, at idle it is quiet and identical to the Honda recording a decibel rating of 82. Add some more rpm and it again matches the Honda bellowing out a conservative 100 dB at half of maximum engine speed (7000 rpm). And despite that it cranks out upwards of 180-horsepower, the Beemer delivers 32.3 mpg. This equates to a range of 145 miles with a full fuel load in the 4.5-gallon tank.

DRIVE TRAIN

As expected the BMW uses a very tight and precise feeling gearbox. Neutral is simple to find when stopped and there is very little play in the shift lever. We also never encountered any missed-shifts. During quick stops the slipper clutch performed without fault just like the Japanese bikes.

One of the coolest features of the BMW’s drive train is its optional $450 electronic quick-shifter. This allows you to maneuver through the 6-speed gearbox without having to let off the throttle or use the clutch. Simply apply some pressure on the shift lever and bam you’re in the next gear.

This substantially decreases acceleration time as evident in the quarter mile test. Here the Beemer recorded the fastest ET of the test by posting a 9.681 with a top speed of 150.4 mph. That’s nearly 5 mph faster than the speedy Ducati 1198S Corse. Further aiding the BMW off the line is its optimum 17/44 final drive gearing and cable-actuated clutch with terrific feel. However we do have one minor gripe and that is that clutch lever pull is heavier than the Japanese bikes.

ERGONOMICS / COMFORT

Jump into the seat and the Beemer feels similar to the Honda. It is narrow and the seat height is on the low side only measuring 32.0 inches off the floor. Reach to the controls and the handlebars feel wide but they are slightly lower than the Honda’s. It is by no means uncomfortable just a hair more aggressive. The fixed footpegs offer good balance between hard-core track and street use.

Overall the riding position keeps you low and inside the center of the bike similar to the Suzuki and KTM but just not quite as low. On the road the cockpit of the BMW is comfortable. It feels more-racy than the Honda but it’s by no means as aggressive as the Kawasaki. The seat is wide and offers a decent amount of padding. Not quite up to GSX-R1000 levels of comfort, but it’s close. The height of the windscreen is also above average. It’s not as big as the Suzuki’s but it is certainly effective for keeping a good portion of the rider’s torso out of dirty air. The mirrors also function well, giving a clear view of what’s behind, but they’re still not as good as those found on the CBR

HANDLING / SUSPENSION

On the road the BMW carves into a turn with pure precision. It steers neutrally and feels quite similar to the CBR only it requires a tad bit more muscle. Once cranked over on the side of the tire the chassis feels rock solid. It’s hard to tell if it’s better than Honda or Suzuki but it’s definitely close between the top trio. In keeping with its German heritage the Beemer rolls on Metzler’s RaceTec K3 tires which feel and perform similar to the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SPs on the other Euro machines.

Rolled onto the scale the BMW posted a weight of 450 lbs with fuel, ABS and all the other gizmos that its $16,480 as-tested price came with. That’s just nine pounds heavier than the class-leading Ducati and the BMW still costs $8520 less.

The BMW makes use of fully adjustable suspension front and rear. Despite its obvious racetrack-oriented design the suspension actually does an admirable job of soaking bumps and small pot holes that you can expect to encounter during the course of a street ride. It’s not quite as plush as the Suzuki, Yamaha or Honda but we wouldn’t say it’s bad. Chassis balance is favorable with the bike resisting the urge to pitch or squat even during heavy throttle or brake load.

“The BMW handles pretty good,” said Atlas. “It doesn’t turn-in quite as fast as the Honda but it’s still by no means slow. It’s composed at lean and it comes off the corner nicely as well. Overall I’d rank it up there toward the top for sure.”

BRAKING

Even if it didn’t have its optional adjustable multi-mode ABS, of all the bikes the one with the strongest, best performing set of binders would be the BMW. Up front it utilizes a pair of two-piece cast Brembo radial-mount calipers that grab onto 320mm diameter discs. A radial-pump master cylinder and stainless-steel brake hoses augment the system. Out back a 220mm disc with a single-piston caliper keeps rear wheel speed in check.

Initial brake bite on the front brakes is the best of the lot which is strange considering that it employs lesser-grade two-piece cast calipers as opposed to the more expensive monoblocs on the other Euro bikes. As you grab the brake lever the brakes have a ramped stopping effect similar to the Ducati’s. In the braking performance test the BMW aced them all by achieving a stopping distance of 118 feet from 60 mph. The stop was performed in Sport mode which enables both front and rear ABS and proves the obvious stopping benefit of ABS.

Perhaps the best feature in the braking department is the multiple ABS modes. In each of the four settings (Rain, Sport, Race, and Slick) the brakes respond differently providing slightly more or less ABS effect. When activated the lever pulses slightly but it isn’t so much that it’s annoying. Another plus is that even when activated there is still an acceptable level of brake feel.

INSTRUMENTATION / ELECTRONICS

Although the Beemer’s instrument display doesn’t look as cool as the Ducati or KTM it sure does work well. Not only does it offer everything the rider needs to see from ambient air temperature to gear position, it’s easy to read and to use.

But the real bonus that sets the BMW apart from all the bikes in this comparison is its use of a sophisticated and user-adjustable engine management system. Even the $13,800 base machine offers an engine power/throttle mode selection (Rain, Sport, Race and Slick) that can be adjusted on the fly using a left-hand handlebar mounted switch. For street riding we preferred Sport setting as it tamed down power slightly and made the throttle less sensitive which ultimately made the bike easier and friendlier on the street.

The $1480 Dynamic Traction Control and Race ABS option adds functionality to the power mode selection by incorporating both a traction control and ABS that uses independent wheel speed and a lean angle sensor. And the best part about it all is that you can turn either traction control or ABS off independently with a simple push of a button.

FINAL THOUGHTS

You want the best Superbike of ’10 for the street? Well the BMW S1000RR is it. From the outrageous performance of its engine to the well-balanced chassis and phenomenal braking capabilities, the BMW does everything well. Factor in its superior electronics that not only make the bike safer but also more fun to ride and what you have is a bike that no other production motorcycle on earth can compete with in stock form. And the best part is? It can be yours for $13,800 for the base model or you can fork over some extra dough and go all the way with the $16,480 for our fully loaded version. Thanks BMW for just raising the Superbike-class bar.

2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R - New Generation Ninja

2011 Kawasaki ZX 10R Lead Shot

It is quite obvious technological era began with sport bikes. Electronic monitoring or assistance germination on a motorcycle in the range all the major manufacturers in any way or form, and the sophistication of these systems continues to increase at an alarming rate.

The system S-KTRC traction control is standard on 2011 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, while KIBS is an additional $ 1000.

The 2011 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R price is 13 799 USD.

First was the opening of the door with Ducati DTC (Ducati Traction Control) in the 1098R homologation model, the wheel speed sensors, the system used to measure the differences and respond through eight levels of control. BMW then took a new stage with its own DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) in the S 1000 RR, which uses gyroscopic sensors to increase the wheel speed sensor data and further customize the response of the measurement system. This allowed a much wider variation in how and when the traction control to intervene when the limit of tire grip has been achieved.

But the new 2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R, it seems, a new threshold has been reached.

2011 Kawasaki ZX 10R Right Lean

Control "intelligent" traction?

The current Ducati and BMW traction control set-up are excellent systems with a wide range of settings. The only problem is that - even adjusted for the level of intervention - the systems are based on a table set with parameters in the loss of traction at a certain point. In other words, not only when a specified threshold is reached, the system to activate and then it just pulls back power to the traction (or a predefined amount of tire slip) is restored.

This is where the 2011 Kawasaki ZX-10R and its new S-KTRC (Sport-Kawasaki Traction Control) system differs from previous TC software. Rather than just react to tire slip when it occurs, analyze the ZX-10R TC is on many factors, including the position of the gas (the higher the degree of openness), wheel speed, engine speed (the higher the rate of change), gear position and speed makes sense and begin to formulate a plan for mapping scenarios before tire slip occurs. And then once the tire slippage occurs, the system S-KTRC continue to analyze all the parameters every five milliseconds, and adjust its mapping strategy to optimize the acceleration (which often means a certain amount of slippage tire is ideal) - making it a true racing-developed TC system that can actually predict traction loss and proactively adapt its maps according to conditions.

The flexibility of the S-KTRC means that not only can adapt to the tire circumference and different profiles, you can change to meet the extra energy caused by modifications to the engine as well. ECU and its software are sophisticated enough not use S-KTRC gyroscopes (angle sensor) or accelerometers. In fact, the system is equipped with an anti-horse is able to distinguish between a horse power (limited) and a pilot-induced horse (which is ignored).

S-KTRC wheel speed sensors also allowed to develop at the same time it says the new KIBS Kawasaki (Kawasaki Intelligent braking) system from the world's smallest and lightest ABS, only six pounds - the weight of 2.3 pounds battery charge will be greater than ABS unit. KIBS not only controls the speed of the wheels, it also analyzes the pressure of the brake hydraulic system, and the first production motorcycle to receive location information the main ECU throttle, gear selection, engine speed and use move to decide how and when to intervene in each wheel. The system is claimed to be able to detect lifting of the rear wheel brake aggressively without the gyro sensors, and rates of cycling are much faster than conventional ABS, which increases the feeling of the brake and feedback when the system is in use (unfortunately, Kawasaki did not have ABS models available at the time of printing, so the review will have to wait until they get their hands on a full-test).
