Nissan may be a little known car maker in India

Nissan Micra Brand Ambassador
Nissan may be a little known car maker in India, but that’s about to change. Just wait till it launches the new Micra in India, for it will change the way you look at the company forever. We should know, we’ve been lucky enough to have been invited to take a short drive in Nissan’s new baby in Thailand. And we can tell you right away, it’s just the sort of car that will appeal to a considerable section of Indian car buyers.

In the flesh, the new Micra doesn’t make much of a first impression. Some of that silvery tinge of excitement you get looking at a new car seems to be missing and the car looks quite familiar as well. The Nissan designers say they have stayed away from ‘edgy’ styling because, according to their surveys, sharp lines and creases give a fragile image, which they wanted to avoid. Instead, Nissan has deliberately gone for a more rounded look that looks more robust. The smooth shape also helps deliver a good drag coefficient as well – 0.32 is impressive.

However, the details that stick in your mind are the attractive, high-mounted light pods and the two-part grille. The arched profile of the cabin is something carried over from the Micra’s DNA, but there is a mishmash of lines at the rear, especially near the rear spoiler and the tail-lights. The Micra does come across as a cute and cheerful design which will surely appeal to women.

Step into the cabin and the oval and rounded theme abounds. You get a round speedometer, a round cluster of buttons on the central console, round vents and a round steering boss. The control stalks feel particularly solid and feel they could last forever.

The Micra is also pretty practical. There is good amount of space for odds and ends and the door pockets are of a decent size. However, the double glovebox which is standard in the European-spec cars is missing and the Indian version only gets a single and very tiny glove compartment.
Like all Nissans, there is no traditional key on this car. You get a keyless entry fob that allows you to yank the door open with it still sitting in your pocket, and the motor is fired with the help of a push button. The keyless start / stop feature is in fact a key feature! It’s the first for a B-segment car.

The Micra is powered by a 1198ccc three-cylinder motor that makes 79bhp but unlike other three-cylinder motors sold in India, there is no balancer shaft used. There is some amount of vibration at idle, which can be felt through the steering but it smoothens out a bit as you rev it. However, the motor responds well to a jab on the accelerator and the Micra moves forward with no hesitation.

This motor has more power than the VW Polo, and you do feel the combined benefit of this and the very light 945kg kerb weight. Nissan says it has engineered the car with fewer parts to keep the weight down, and it sure seems to have helped. The car feels nice and sprightly and acceleration is impressive enough to satisfy most drivers. The motor pulls all the way to 6000rpm and acceleration in and around 5000rpm is particularly strong.

Straightline stability on the car is impressive as well. With a wheel at each corner and most of the weight contained between the wheels, the Micra drives more like a big car than a little one. There, however, isn’t too much feel in the steering. The column-mounted electric steering feels a touch vague and lifeless which will disappoint enthusiasts. However, city commuters will be thrilled by the Micra’s very tight turning circle which was actually designed keeping Indian customers in mind.

Nissan has offered automatic climate control, a feature that’s not common among hatchbacks. And it’s got electrically folding mirrors. There’s a mini on-board computer which gives real-time fuel consumption and ‘distance-to-empty’ readouts. In fact, Nissan wants to make the feature-packed Micra one of its selling points.

However, features like steering-mounted audio controls are missing for the Indian model. According to company sources, Nissan is saving some of the other goodies like steering controls for the audio and Bluetooth for hands-free phone operation for a refresh that is being planned a year after launch.

Of course, all these features are reserved for the high-end model and in basic trim, you still get power steering and front power windows (manual at the rear). The air-con is standard but not climate control and alloys are replaced with bare-looking steel wheels.

The beige interior and generous glass make for a very airy cabin. The interior quality isn’t brilliant but pretty good. The build quality is between the Swift and the Polo, which is still the benchmark for interior quality. The front seats are very comfortable and Nissan has consciously made the nose of the car visible from the cabin; this is apparently a common complaint from first-time drivers who will make up a fair percent of Micra buyers.

At the back, headroom and legroom are surprisingly generous. The only grouse we have with the rear seat is that it’s too low, flat and with little under-thigh support. Nissan needs to improve the seat squab before launching the car in India. The boot too is fairly generous but there’s no split, the seat flips forward in one piece via a neat release latch.

It is clear that Nissan, known for its engineering and innovation skills, has the know-how to build very effective small cars. The new Micra may not look wildly exciting but behind its cheerful, cute lines lies solid engineering and innovation. How well Nissan tunes and adapts this car for Indian conditions remains to be seen but we are confident that the Micra will take to Indian roads like a duck to water.

What we don’t know is how Nissan will price the car. The sense we get is that it will be in that narrow window between the Swift and the Polo. Some say that Nissan might even undercut the Swift to get market share. If Nissan prices the Micra right, it has a winner on its hands.

Spotted! Scion FR-S Prototype Hits the Road for Testing

Thanks to the concept that was shown at the New York auto show earlier this year, we already had a pretty good idea of what the finalized Scion FR-S will look like. Now, our friends at Motor Trend have managed to snap a production version of the new sports car undergoing testing in Germany near the famed Nürburgring race track.

The car spotted is covered head-to-toe in camouflage, but the spot-patterned wrap doesn’t completely obscure many of the car’s details. As expected, the design has been toned down from the original FT-86 concept, but it has not lost its edge. Gone are the flared ducts on the front valance, replaced with fog lights and turn indicators, while the rear has inherited a subtle diffuser with dual exhaust ports. Both head- and taillight treatments are less aggressive and more rounded, as was the case with the concept shown at New York.

Although less revolutionary than Toyota’s original FT-86 design, we’re happy with what we can see in this pre-production vehicle. The essence of the three concepts leading to the production vehicle (the FT-86 Concept from the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, the FT-86 II Concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and the aforementioned FR-S Concept) remains largely intact. Check out all the shots of this tester over at Motor Trend.

2011 New York Auto Show Volkswagen Beetle 2012

New York Auto Show Volkswagen Beetle 2012

After more than a decade a replacement for the ‘New Beetle’ has finally arrived, making its world debut initially at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show and then again at the 2011 New York Auto Show just a couple of days later. The latest car drops its New tag and is just called the Beetle, or 2012 Volkswagen Beetle if you want the complete name.

Sharper handling, refined styling and a much more premium interior are the main improvements. The car keeps its trademark rounded fenders but a flatter roofline and a C-pillar reminiscent of the one on the original Beetle also features. A direct benefit is more headroom for rear-seat passengers.

The car is also 3.3 inches wider and sits 0.5 of an inch lower than the one it replaces, adding a stronger stance and more premium look. Other upmarket touches include bi-xenon headlights, 19-inch wheels and sporty dual exhaust tips.
Inside Volkswagen Beetle
Under the hood of the range-topping model is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI gasoline mill delivering 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels. A six-speed manual comes as standard but customers can opt for a sweet six-speed dual clutch DSG and XDS electronic differential.

A 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque TDI turbodiesel 2.0-liter mill is also offered, returning up to 29/40 mpg city/highway fuel economy.

Rounding out the range is an entry-level 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque model with the same 2.5-liter five-cylinder from the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, available with a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

Stay tuned for more details and watch out for live shots of the car direct from the 2011 New York Auto Show floor.

Porsche Reveals New Panamera Models

Porsche Reveals New Panamera
Marking a North American premiere at the New York International Auto Show, Porsche today showed two new versions of its highly acclaimed Panamera four-door sports sedan, including the company’s most fuel-efficient car ever – the 2012 Panamera S Hybrid — and its highest-performance Panamera ever, the 2012 Panamera Turbo S.

“Today we are unveiling two new, dynamic and high-performance Panamera models,” said Detlev von Platen, Porsche Cars North America’s President and CEO. “One is a highly advanced hybrid and the other is a car that raises the bar higher than ever in the premium sports sedan segment.”

2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S

2012 Panamera S Hybrid 550x315 Porsche Reveals New Panamera Models

With its new four-door Panamera Turbo S, Porsche is establishing a new benchmark for its competitors by delivering ultra high performance and efficiency, sports-car-like driving dynamics, and first-class comfort in a purely Porsche package.

The power under the hood of the new top-of-the-line Panamera is based on the proven twin-turbocharged 4.8-liter V8 engine in the Panamera Turbo. In the Turbo S this powerplant generates 550 horsepower, 50 more than that of the Panamera Turbo. The torque is also increased significantly over the Turbo from 516 lb-ft to 553 lb-ft. Even more torque — 590 lb-ft — is generated temporarily by the “Sport” and “Sport Plus” overboost mode of the standard Sport Chrono Package Turbo.

The increase in power in the Panamera Turbo S is the result of a quicker, more responsive turbo response and modified engine control unit. With the help of Launch Control, the newest Panamera can reach 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The top-track speed is 190 mph. And despite this increased performance, fuel consumption is expected to remain comparable to the Panamera Turbo that delivers an EPA estimated rating of 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway. Official EPA fuel economy estimates for the Panamera Turbo S will become available prior to the car’s on-sale date later this spring.

Even for a world-class luxury car, the Panamera Turbo S offers an extraordinarily high level of features. In keeping with its sporty concept, it comes equipped with the most important driving-dynamic control systems. For example, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) is an active anti-roll system that significantly reduces lateral body movement during corning, which enhances stability, handling and overall occupant comfort. Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) is also standard and works to help ensure superior traction and higher-performance cornering by applying a variable torque split to the rear wheels in combination with an electronically controlled rear differential lock. Also standard is Porsche’s advanced speed-sensitive Servotronic® steering system, a sports exhaust system, and the Sport Chrono Package Turbo that further tunes the engine and suspension at the touch of the “Sport Plus” button.

While the sporting character of the new Panamera Turbo S is most apparent behind the wheel, the car’s exterior tastefully exudes its high-performance ambitions. The new 20-inch Turbo II wheels with increased rear axle track width, side skirts from the Porsche Exclusive range, and the adaptive four-way extending rear spoiler express the car’s elite performance abilities. Inside, the fusion of exclusivity and sportiness is conveyed in the interior by the standard bi-color leather finish. A new combination of black/cream is offered exclusively for the new Panamera Turbo S with Agate Grey/cream also being added as an exclusive option later this year. Agate Gray Metallic will also be an exclusive exterior color.

The new Porsche Panamera Turbo S will have a base MSRP of $173,200 (excluding destination).

2012 Porsche Panamera S Hybrid
The debut of the Panamera S Hybrid adds another important chapter to the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy of committing to build new cars that strive to deliver sportier performance with more fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Without sacrificing high-performance or luxury and comfort, this new Panamera model produces 380 horsepower with fuel consumption of only 6.8 L/100 km on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), making it the most fuel efficient Porsche of all time.

Official EPA fuel economy estimates for the U.S. will be available closer to the car’s on-sale date late this year.

As you would expect from Porsche, the Panamera S Hybrid sets new standards in terms of performance as well as hybrid efficiencies. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds and has a top track speed of 167 mph (270 km/h). Its range in purely electric mode is approximately one mile, with electric-only acceleration possible up to just over 50 mph (85 km/h).

The Porsche parallel full hybrid system also reduces consumption at high speeds thanks to its ‘sailing’ or coasting mode. When the driver lifts off the accelerator at normal highway cruising speeds, the gasoline engine is completely switched off and disengaged from the drivetrain by a decoupling clutch. This eliminates the combustion engine’s drag forces and braking effect in the interest of lower resistance, fuel consumption and emissions. As soon as the driver presses the accelerator, to pass another vehicle for example, the gasoline engine smoothly starts within fractions of a second and engine rpms are increased to match the current vehicle speed. It does this seamlessly thanks to the Hybrid Manager, which also helps the Panamera S Hybrid accelerate dynamically in gears at higher speeds.

The Panamera S Hybrid employs a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine that delivers 333 horsepower. It is supported by a 47-horsepower (34 kW) electric motor. Depending on driving conditions, either drive unit can operate independently or together to drive the rear wheels. The electric motor, which also serves as the car’s generator and starter, combines with the decoupling clutch to form the compact hybrid module located between the combustion engine and the transmission. The electric motor is connected to a nickel metal hydride (NiMh) battery that stores electric energy recovered from braking and other driving situations. The transmission is the same eight-speed Tiptronic S fitted in the Cayenne models, with a wide range of gear ratios.

The Panamera S Hybrid has an even higher level of standard equipment than the V8 Panamera S that includes Adaptive Air Suspension with the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) adaptive shock absorber system, Servotronic variable-assist power steering and a host of other features. This new model also features an innovative display that provides the driver with relevant information about the status of the vehicle’s hybrid drive systems.

The Panamera S Hybrid will go on sale in the United States later in 2011 at a base suggested retail price of $95,000 (excluding destination).

Tata Venture in India to be launched

TATA Venture For Your Family
The much talked about Tata Venture makes its way to Maharashtra today making it the second market to get Venture after India.

Tata Venture is priced at 5.07 lac, ex showroom. The mill in the MPV is a 1.4 L TDI diesel engine. The same powertrain can be found in company's other cars such as Tata Indigo and Tata Indica Turbo. The power and the torque produced are 69 bhp@4500 rpm and 13.7 kgm@2500 rpm respectively.

Currently available as 5, 7 and 8 seater,Tata Venture has three rows that face front. The MPV also includes collapsible steering unit, power steering, power windows, two row HVAC unit, music system, reverse parking, keyless entry and engine immobilizer. What stands out in the Tata Venture is its plug in windows and a glass inside a glass which is found in vans from Volkswagen.

It is surprising to know that the Maruti Eeco has no challengers in its segment and price bracket. The only other challenger is its own stable mate, the Maruti Suzuki Omni. However the crude image of this car means that most of the buyers would stick with the Maruti Eeco and not go for the Omni. The whole setup may change in a short while. There is another worthy competitor coming its way. No, we aren’t referring to the GM’s offensive by the way of bringing its low cost Chinese offering into India. We are talking about the new Tata Venture in India.

Present in three variants-CX, EX and GX, Tata Venture offers five vibrant colors for its customers to choose from. With a mileage of 15.42 kmpl, Tata Venture also offers a 2 year warranty or 75000 kms, whichever is earlier. The MPV will be available in 42 dealerships (20 car dealerships and 22 CV dealerships).

Now, the Tata Venture in India by Tata Motors was displayed early on last year in the Delhi Auto Expo show. It will be a seven seater van and would look like one also. The niche passenger cargo segment hasn’t witnessed too much action in all these years and looks like every feather would be ruffled in the coming months in 2011. The Tata Ace in India would come with a 7 seater configuration and a diesel engine. It is based on the Tata’s very own ACE platform. The engine powering this van would be a diesel engine preferably the 1.4 liter diesel from the Tata Indica range. It would churn out close to 78 Bhp and would be tuned more for lower down poke.

The advantage for the Tata Venture in India is that this segment isn’t that crowded as of now and moreover it has a diesel engine under its hood which would mean that running costs would be an all time low. The 1.4 diesel is known for its frugal nature and this would be amplified with the lighter ACE platform. Sightings of test mules running around near Tata’s plant in Pune shows that this van is compact like the Nano but would have good interior space. Also mules mean that Tata Motors have finished testing this van and would now launch it any time soon. It would be available at a premium than the Maruti offering however we firmly believe that it does have a market in India. One of the Tata Motors official confirmed that this car would be launched by end of February 2011. Fleet and taxi owners rejoice as the pricing is said to hover around the Rs 4.5 lakhs mark.
